2.6 describe the structure of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids


as large molecules made up from smaller basic units

Carbohydrates
Simple sugars- monosaccharides-such as glucose are the basic carbohydrates
They join together to make more complex disaccharides and polysaccharides: 


Proteins
are made up of amino acids
amino acids differ depending on what the 'r' (rest) is:
Lipids, Carbohydrates, and Proteins

Lipids
are made from combining glycerol and three fatty acids:
Lipids, Carbohydrates, and Proteins

    1. Carbohydrates are stored as starch in plants, but in humans it is glucose: glucose is used in respiration to create energy. Proteins are broken down into amino acids in the digestive system: these amino acids are then used to create new proteins which make up cells (growth and repair.) Lipids become fat stores in the body, these offer protection and insulation to our bodies; lipids can also be used to create energy.

    3. Humans store carbohydrates as glycerol so that when it is needed it can be turned into glucose faster than breaking down starch would allow. Second you cannot create energy, therefore lipids are broken down and energy is released from them.

  6. where you have said "amino acids differ depending on what the "r" (rest) is" what does this mean?

    1. Basically there are other molecules in the amino acid which you don't need to know about for GCSE and you just called it the R-group. In each R-group there are different molecules which change the amino acid- hope that answers your question :)
