4.11 understand the biological consequences of pollution of air by sulfur dioxide and by carbon monoxide

Sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide are created by many processes we use in factories and homes. When in the atmosphere they can dissolve in rain water to create rain the is acidic. Acid rain corrodes metals and rocks like limestone which can damage buildings and statues. Acid rain can also change the PH in soil or rivers, this can mean that some species can not survive in that area.

  1. It is sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which cause acid rain. Carbon monoxide affects humans as it prevents red blood cells from transporting oxygen around the body, which can lead to suffocation.

  2. Carbon monoxide binds with hemoglobin more strongly than oxygen which leads to less oxygen being absorbed in the body. Therefore, it can cause a person to faint or die due to the lack of oxygen. On the other hand, sulfur dioxide combines with rainwater to form acid rain which is harmful for the environment. It can kill conifers and plants and can be the reason for the acidification of lakes and rivers and the soil. If the soil becomes acidic, the roots' growth is affected making them unable to effectively absorb the minerals in the soil. It will also cause the extra to leach into the lakes causing eutrophication, which can kill fishes.
